From Success to Struggle

Meet Neelakantan, a well-educated man in his mid-50s. Once an Automobile Engineer at a renowned company in Chennai, he moved to Bangalore 30 years ago. In 1992, he married and supported his wife’s post-graduate studies, which eventually led to her earning a Ph.D. and securing a prestigious job. Neelakantan also guided his son to become a successful electrical engineer. Life seemed perfect, but seven years ago, everything changed. Neelakantan began facing relentless bullying from his wife, leading to constant conflicts that shattered the peace at home. The disputes over their education and career differences deeply affected him, driving him to alcohol. This, unfortunately, resulted in a stroke that paralyzed his right leg below the knee.

Deserted by Family and Struck by Tragedy

Three years ago, Neelakantan’s wife and son, unwilling to care for an incapacitated man, abandoned him. Alone and desperate, he sought help from the local police, who helped him find refuge at Anubandha Charity. In 2021, tragedy struck again when Neelakantan's 23-year-old son succumbed to COVID-19. This devastating loss plunged him into depression, leaving him grappling with despair and searching for meaning in life.

Finding Strength and Seeking Support

Thanks to the support from Anubandha Charity, Neelakantan has managed to regain some self-reliance. He takes daily one-hour walks to improve his leg mobility and helps around the charity by monitoring those with mental disabilities and conducting minor electrical repairs. Despite his efforts, Neelakantan's right leg and hand have weakened, and his speech has deteriorated in recent weeks. He requires additional medical support, and Varalakshmi, the charity owner, is exploring ways to provide the necessary medical care.
